Belvedere Vienna Celebrates Alma-Tadema's Decadent Antiquity
The Belvedere Museum in Vienna presents a major exhibition on Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912), the Dutch-born, British-adopted painter known for his sensual, decorative scenes of ancient Rome, Egypt, and biblical history. The show, titled "Decadence and Antiquity," runs until June 18, 2017, and is organized in collaboration with the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden. Curated by Alfred Weidinger, the exhibition features iconic works such as "The Roses of Heliogabalus" (1888), "The Finding of Moses," "An Audience at Agrippa's" (1875), and "Women of Anphissa." Alma-Tadema's meticulous attention to female faces, hairstyles, drapery, and marble details, combined with his monumental architectural settings, created a dreamlike aesthetic that influenced filmmakers like Enrico Guazzoni ("Quo Vadis?", 1913) and Ridley Scott ("Gladiator", 2000), as well as the Viennese Secessionist painter Gustav Klimt. The artist was a member of the Royal Academy from 1879 and other European academies. His death in June 1912, coinciding with the sinking of the Titanic, marked the end of an era. The exhibition's immersive installation uses violet and purple walls with classical architectural inserts to evoke the decadent and symbolist atmosphere of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
