Bellinzona's Castles and Cultural Heritage: A Swiss Treasure

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

The capital of the Swiss Canton Ticino, Bellinzona, is home to three medieval castles recognized by UNESCO: Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro, which received World Heritage status on November 30, 2000. Castelgrande, the oldest of the trio, boasts fortifications from the 13th century and underwent restoration by Aurelio Galfetti from 1984 to 1991. Montebello, constructed by the Rusca family during the 13th and 14th centuries, now features a civic museum that was renovated in 1974. Built in 1479 by engineer Benedetto Ferrini, Sasso Corbaro adds to the city’s historical significance. Bellinzona also celebrates the Rabadan Carnival, established in 1862, now marking its 150th year, alongside cultural sites like Museo Civico di Villa Cedri and CACT, founded in 1994. Notable landmarks include Teatro Sociale (1846), Church of San Biagio (first mentioned in 1237), and the renovated Ospizio del San Gottardo.
