Belinda Tate Appointed Director of Indianapolis Museum of Art

institutional · 2026-05-01

Belinda Tate has been appointed as the new director of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, following a challenging selection process. She previously served as the head of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts since 2014, where she was honored with the Epic Award for her commitment to community engagement. Tate succeeds Charles L. Venable, who stepped down following criticism of a job description that appeared to prioritize a traditional art audience while aiming for inclusivity. She will be working alongside Colette Pierce Burnette, the first Black woman to hold the CEO position at Newfields. Tate will officially start her role on November 6, 2023.
