Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński's 'Aerolectics' at Kunst Meran Exposes Colonial Missionary Abductions

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński's solo exhibition, 'Aerolectics,' at Kunst Meran – Merano Arte, runs until June 2025 and explores the forced diaspora of African children by Catholic missionaries during the 19th century. Central to the exhibition is Asue*, a Sudanese girl who was purchased by priest Niccolò Olivieri and confined in the Ursuline convent of Brunico on January 11, 1855. She was renamed Angela and characterized as 'indomitable as a storm.' The artist's latest creations encompass video, installations, and sculptures, drawing inspiration from the Caribbean Artist Movement and Yoruba symbolism, including a racist offering box. A seminar on March 16 will address the restitution of cultural artifacts, followed by a performance evening on April 11. The second chapter of 'The Invention of Europe' will debut in June.
