Belgrade Exhibition Explores Yugoslav Avant-Garde Cinema Through Alternative Means

exhibition · 2026-04-19

From June 22 to September 29, 2013, the Čolaković Gallery at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade hosted the exhibition Cinema by Other Means, curated by Dejan Sretenović. This exhibition was inspired by Pavle Levi's 2012 publication, which delves into non-cinematic practices within multidisciplinary art. It highlighted Yugoslav avant-garde pieces from the 1920s and 1930s, showcasing movements such as Zenitism and Surrealism. Featured artists included Boško Tokin, Dragan Aleksić, and Aleksandar Vučo. Among the notable works were the 1930 assemblage The Frenzied Marble by Vučo and Dušan Matić, as well as Mihovil Pansini's 1963 anti-film K3. The gallery is named for Rodoljub Čolaković, and the exhibition did not provide English translations or a catalog, only offering a Serbian version of Levi's book.
