Belgium's Spring-Summer 2018 Art Exhibitions: From Medardo Rosso to Eija-Liisa Ahtila

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Six exhibitions across four Belgian cities are on view through summer 2018. In Ghent, the MSK presents Medardo Rosso (until June 24), the first Belgian museum show of the modern sculpture pioneer since 1909, curated by Gloria Moure, with loans from European collections and the Museo Medardo Rosso in Barzio. Also at MSK, "The Ladies of the Baroque" (Oct 20, 2018–Jan 20, 2019) focuses on women artists from 1580–1680, including Artemisia Gentileschi, Marietta Robusti, Sofonisba Anguissola, and others, with decorative arts and works from Venice, Rome, Naples, and Bologna. At S.M.A.K., Wim Delvoye presents new productions (until Aug 19). In Brussels, BOZAR hosts "Europe Europe. Somewhere in Between" (June 20–Aug 19, 2019), a traveling project initiated in 2014 at Astrup Fearnley Museet by Gunnar B. Kvaran, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Thomas Boutoux, now covering eleven cities. In Mechelen, Hof van Busleyden presents "Call for Justice" (until June 24), exploring art and law in the Burgundian Netherlands (1384–1482), with works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Rubens, and van Dyck, closing the Op.Recht.Mechelen festival and reopening the museum's renovated spaces. In Leuven, M Museum hosts the first Belgian retrospective of Finnish video artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila (until Sep 16), featuring historical and new multichannel installations.
