Belgian Pavilion at 2019 Venice Biennale Presents MONDO CANE by Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys

At the 2019 Venice Biennale, Belgium is represented by Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys through their exhibition titled MONDO CANE, located in the Giardini. This project showcases around twenty automated dolls, along with pastoral illustrations and the work of artisans such as a cobbler and a stonemason. Additional rooms reveal a parallel universe of marginalized individuals. Visitors activate the dolls, resulting in an environment filled with sounds and movements. De Gruyter and Thys feel privileged to represent Belgium, noting that the romantic notion resonates with their vision. They find the pavilion system of the Biennale amusing and contradictory. De Gruyter fondly recalls his nighttime experiences in Venice and expresses interest in the Venezuelan Pavilion. The event is scheduled from May 11 to November 24, 2019.
