Beirut Explosion Devastates Art Scene Amid Economic Crisis

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-23

A massive explosion at Beirut's port on August 4 killed at least 145 people and injured 5,000, devastating the city's cultural infrastructure. Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab attributed the blast to 2.7 tons of ammonium nitrate stored at the site since 2014. The Marfa Gallery, Galerie Tanit, and Opera Gallery were completely destroyed, while Mark Hachem, Sfeir-Semler, and Janine Rubeiz galleries suffered severe damage. The Sursock Museum, housing over 4,000 works from 400 Arab artists, sustained structural damage to its skylights, windows, and doors. Director Zeina Arida expressed concerns about repair costs amid Lebanon's 80% currency devaluation and electricity shortages. The Maronite Cathedral of Saint George was also hit. The disaster compounds Lebanon's political and economic crisis, following October 2019 protests against corruption and public service decay. Artist Katya Traboulsi described reopening old war wounds, while photographer Tarek Moukaddem, who lost his studio and home, sees art as essential expression. Beirut Art Fair founder Laure d'Hauteville called the situation unprecedented in her 29 years in Lebanon. President Michel Aoun allocated 100 billion Lebanese pounds to an emergency recovery fund, with August 5 declared a day of mourning.
