Beirut and the Golden Sixties: A Deep Dive into Lebanese Modernism at Lyon Biennale

The 16th Lyon Biennale, titled 'Manifesto of Fragility' and curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath (directors of Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, and commissioners of the France Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale), runs until December 31, 2022. The exhibition 'Beirut and the Golden Sixties' at MAC – Musée d'Art Contemporain explores Lebanese modernism from 1958 (the year of crisis) to 1975 (the outbreak of civil war), featuring 230 works by 34 artists and over 300 archival documents. The show, previously at Gropius Bau in Berlin until June 2022, will travel to Mathaf in Doha from March 19 to August 5, 2023. The accompanying catalog, published by Silvana Editoriale, includes a notable essay by Natasha Gasparian on 'The Trouble with Sex: Surrealism as Style in 1970s Beirut' and highlights artist Huguette Caland (1931-2019), who was celebrated with a retrospective at Tate St Ives in her death year but still has untapped market potential.
