Beijing Artists Protest Studio Demolitions in Songzhuang, Clash with Police

In Beijing's Songzhuang neighborhood, police clashed with artists protesting the demolition of studios belonging to Shen Jingdong and Cao Zhiwen. The confrontation occurred on Wednesday morning after Shen called for solidarity via WeChat. Approximately 100 artists faced over 100 police personnel. Despite resistance, the property was completely demolished by afternoon, with artists' possessions discarded on the street. Two protesters were arrested and several sustained injuries. Shen had purchased the property in 2009 for RMB 112,500 (about £13,000), but government officials stated no compensation would be provided for the destroyed building or damaged belongings. Songzhuang, established as China's largest artist colony in the mid-1990s, has seen property values surge rapidly since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, leading to numerous demolitions and evictions.
