Beeple's Robotic Dog Installation 'Regular Animals' to Debut at Berlin's Neue Nationalgalerie

exhibition · 2026-03-14

American digital artist Beeple, whose real name is Mike Winkelmann, will present his installation 'Regular Animals' at Berlin's Neue Nationalgalerie from April 29 to May 10, 2026, coinciding with Gallery Weekend Berlin. The work features autonomous robotic dogs with hyperrealistic heads modeled after contemporary figures like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, as well as 20th-century art masters including Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso. These robotic creatures move freely through the exhibition space using sensors and autonomous systems, observing their surroundings with integrated cameras. The captured images are processed by artificial intelligence systems, then printed and distributed to visitors through a deliberately provocative method: the images are expelled from the rear of the robots. The installation first appeared in 2025 at Art Basel Miami Beach's digital section Zero 10, where it became the most photographed and shared work at the fair, with robotic sculpture editions selling for approximately $100,000 each during VIP previews. At the Neue Nationalgalerie, the work will be displayed in the foyer of the modernist building designed by Mies van der Rohe. Museum curators note that Beeple's project reflects on the growing influence of digital platforms and algorithmic technologies in shaping contemporary reality, creating a satirical allegory of new technological and media hierarchies through these animal-power figure hybrids. The installation will engage in dialogue with Nam June Paik's 1994 work 'Andy Warhol Robot' from the museum's collection, suggesting continuity between 20th-century media culture reflections and new AI-driven visual production forms. Beeple gained prominence in digital art discourse following the record $69 million Christie's sale of his work 'Everydays: The First 5000 Days' in 2021, and has since expanded his practice toward immersive installations and hybrid systems combining artificial intelligence with performance.
