Bedwyr Williams presents CGI video installation for Artes Mundi 7 prize exhibition in Cardiff
Bedwyr Williams has created a 20-minute 4K video loop for the Artes Mundi 7 exhibition, depicting an imaginary futuristic city built around Cadair Idris mountain in North Wales. The work employs CGI and composited images in a matte painting style, projected at 11 meters. Williams, who represented Wales at the 55th Venice Biennale and was shortlisted for the 2015 Film London Jarman Award, describes his practice as exploring dystopian futures through absurdist humor interacting with modern banality. His 2015 film 'Century Egg' is currently featured in the touring British Art Show 8. The artist experienced personal difficulty during the exhibition's preparation, as his mother passed away a week before the opening. Regarding the £40,000 Artes Mundi prize—the largest monetary award in the UK—Williams stated that as a non-'trustafarian,' he would use winnings to clear accrued debts, with any remainder funding a scary film. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Cardiff on January 26. The exhibition runs at National Museum Cardiff and Chapter, Cardiff through February 26. ArtReview serves as media partner for the event.
