Bechara Maalouf's lamps evoke Lebanese window guards at Komune

exhibition · 2026-05-19

During NYC Design Week, New York fashion retailer Komune is hosting What Still Holds, a show of laser-cut metal lamps by designer Bechara Maalouf. The three lamps are wrapped in lattice patterns inspired by the wrought iron window guards of Maalouf's family home in Kfertay, Lebanon. Mounted on recycled wood from Lower East Side buildings, the lamps include magnetic flies that can be repositioned. The show also features a mirror created in 2025, a triptych shown for the first time, and personal knick-knacks. The triptych incorporates fragments of 5,000 Lebanese lira notes, referencing Lebanon's economic crash. Maalouf used magnetic stainless steel for the first time, allowing the flies to stick. He hand-bent the tabs on the lamps with encouragement from Komune creative director Brandon Fogarty. The show runs from May 15 to June 8 at 92 Orchard Street. Maalouf was also featured in the Shine lighting exhibit by NYCxDesign and Design Milk. The exhibition explores Maalouf's connection to Lebanon, emphasizing resilience amid war and economic hardship.
