Beaufort2018: Belgian Triennial Brings Art to the Beach

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The sixth edition of Beaufort, a triennial along Belgium's 70-kilometer coastline, features 18 international artists with site-specific sculptures and installations across nine municipalities. Curated by Heidi Ballet, the exhibition runs until September 30, 2018, in public spaces accessible 24/7. Artists include Nina Beier, whose work 'Men' on Nieuwpoort beach is partially submerged at high tide; Edith Dekyndt, who performs cleaning rituals at the Memorial of Albert I; and Simon Dybbroe Møller, who created a bronze Netscape logo that oxidizes from sea salt. Stief DeSmet contributed two works: 'Monument for Cervus Vitalis #2' and a shell sculpture on Ostend's pier. Ballet selected artists who reinvent themselves and engage with new contexts, focusing on the role of monuments in relation to their environment and time. Some works become permanent acquisitions, joining pieces by Daniel Buren and Wim Delvoye from previous editions. The triennial is organized by the coastal tourism authority and offers guided group tours.
