Beatriz González Retrospective at KW Berlin
The largest-ever international retrospective of Colombian artist Beatriz González is on view at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin until January 6, 2019. Born in 1938 in Bucaramanga, González has drawn from media photographs since the 1960s. Her work 'Los suicidas del Sisga No. 2' (1965) originated from a news story about a couple's suicide, transforming their pre-death photo into an icon. In 'Decoración interior' (1981), she depicted President Julio César Turbay drinking and laughing with the upper class, contrasting with Colombia's rising violence. The exhibition is organized thematically, featuring ready-mades like 'La última mesa' (1970), a pop/kitsch version of da Vinci's 'Last Supper'. The series 'Los cargueros' (2007-2008) repeats silhouettes of men carrying a corpse in a hammock, while 'Las delicias' (1997) repeatedly shows crying women. The show includes works from 1965 to 2017.
