Beatrix Ruf Cleared in Stedelijk Museum Conflict of Interest Investigation

An independent investigation commissioned by Amsterdam's city council has cleared former Stedelijk Museum director Beatrix Ruf of conflict of interest allegations. The 120-page report, published in June 2018, found no evidence that Ruf's art advisory consultancy Currentmatters created conflicts with her museum role, despite media reports suggesting otherwise. While investigators stated Ruf should have followed the "spirit" of governance regulations more closely, they affirmed her integrity and dedication to the institution. Following the report's release, three supervisory board members—Jos van Rooijen, Madeleine de Cock Buning, and Rita Kersting—announced their resignations. Ruf had resigned as director in October 2017 amid mounting media scrutiny over her advisory business. In a statement responding to the findings, Ruf emphasized that all her side activities were approved and that she never operated an art consulting business concurrently with her museum duties. The investigation specifically examined whether loans accepted by the Stedelijk from owners Ruf advised through Currentmatters represented improper relationships. Investigators concluded these arrangements did not constitute conflicts of interest, contradicting earlier press narratives about ethical breaches.
