Beatrice Venezi's appointment as La Fenice director sparks protests and subscription cancellations

institutional · 2026-04-26

Beatrice Venezi, a 34-year-old conductor from Lucca with ties to Italy's far-right, has been appointed musical director of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, a decision promoted by mayor Luigi Brugnaro and approved by the foundation's board. Venezi will serve from October 2026 to March 2030. The appointment has triggered widespread backlash: the orchestra's musicians sent a formal letter to superintendent Nicola Colabianchi demanding her removal, citing her lack of experience—she has never conducted an opera or symphonic concert at La Fenice, nor at major international opera houses or festivals. Subscribers have begun cancelling memberships within 24 hours of the announcement. Critics include conductor Silvia Massarelli (Opéra Bastille, New York Philharmonic) and former superintendent Cristiano Chiariot. Venezi, who graduated in piano from the Rinaldo Franci Institute in Siena, co-hosted Sanremo 2021, received the Atreju21 award from Fratelli d'Italia, and served as music advisor to former culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano. She previously directed the Orchestra della Toscana, Festival Puccini, and Fondazione Taormina Arte.
