Beatrice Pucci and Marino Neri lead animation workshops in Marche prisons
In Italian prisons, often forgotten despite constitutional mandates for rehabilitation, artists Beatrice Pucci and Marino Neri conducted stop-motion animation workshops for inmates across six facilities in the Marche region. Funded by the regional government since 2017, the project "Scolpire il movimento" involved prisons in Fossombrone, Pesaro, Ancona Montacuto, Ancona Barcaglione, Fermo, and Ascoli Piceno. Inmates wrote and produced the animated short "Seraffino l'asino con la testa di pecora" over four days per institution, with tasks divided like a production studio. The artists treated detainees as academy students, fostering engagement and pride. The film was screened at the Pesaro Film Festival. A second phase focused on ecology, producing videos using cut paper, plasticine, and sand. The workshops gave inmates a voice and a way to connect with family beyond prison reality.
