Béatrice Balcou's 'One Thing at a Time' at FRAC Franche-Comté

On September 7, 2013, Béatrice Balcou took over two galleries at FRAC Franche-Comté in Besançon for a one-day event entitled 'Chaque chose en son temps' ('One Thing at a Time'). This program showcased works from Balcou, Manon de Boer, Carole Douillard, Mark Geffriaud, Laura Lamiel, and Marie Lund, delving into concepts of time, labor, and the intersection of work and leisure. Balcou's performance involved wrapping and unwrapping frames in bubble wrap, turning art handling into an artistic act. Laura Lamiel created ink drawings from her ongoing series 'Trois ans, trois mois, trois jours' (2012–ongoing). Five volunteers recited Homer's Odyssey, reviving Geffriaud's 'La Marée' (2010). Manon de Boer's 16mm film 'Dissonant' (2010) featured dancer Cynthia Loemij performing to Ysaÿe's violin sonatas. In 'A Sleep' (2005), Carole Douillard attempted to fall asleep while a technician constructed plinths. Marie Lund's 'The Roof Holding the Walls Together' (2010) was presented by a guide. The event also incorporated theoretical insights from Yve-Alain Bois on slow viewing and Jonathan Crary regarding sleep in a capitalist context.
