Beato Angelico's masterpieces return to Florence's Museo di San Marco in new installation

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museo di San Marco in Florence has unveiled a completely redesigned Sala del Beato Angelico, featuring sixteen masterpieces by the Early Renaissance painter. The new installation, funded by Friends of Florence, marks the museum's 150th anniversary celebrations. Director Angelo Tartuferi emphasized that the updated lighting and chronological arrangement will astonish even scholars. Works include the Deposition from the Cross, the Last Judgment, the Annalena Altarpiece, the San Marco Altarpiece, the Tabernacle of the Linaioli, and smaller pieces like the panels of the Armadio degli Argenti and refined predellas. The previous installation from 1980 by director Giorgio Bonsanti has been replaced with modern structures and technologically advanced illumination. Didactic panels in Italian and English provide reconstructions of original pictorial complexes and indicate parts held in other museums. Simonetta Brandolini d'Adda, President of Friends of Florence, stated that the display now extraordinarily enhances the artist's mastery.
