Beato Angelico's Disassembled Masterpiece Reunited at Uffizi

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Uffizi Galleries in Florence will bring together Fra Angelico's 'Coronation of the Virgin' (1435) with its predella, which has been apart since World War II. This altarpiece, commissioned by the Oblates for Sant'Egidio, was added to the Uffizi in 1825 but was not displayed until 1948, lacking its predella. During WWII, the predella was relocated for safety. Post-war, the main panel remained at the Uffizi, while the predella was transferred to the Museo di San Marco. Director Simone Verde facilitated this reunion by trading it for the 'Tebaide' panel and four monochrome Dominican saint panels. Additionally, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli will reunite Piero della Francesca's panels, and Rosso Fiorentino's 'Deposition' will return to Sansepolcro.
