Beato Angelico's Armadio degli Argenti panels on view in Milan
The fifteenth edition of the Capolavoro per Milano project brings eight panels from Beato Angelico's Armadio degli Argenti to the Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini in Milan. Painted between 1450 and 1452, the panels depict the Infancy of Christ and originate from the Museo di San Marco in Florence. The work was commissioned in 1448 by Piero Cosimo de' Medici and originally housed votive offerings for the miraculous image of the Madonna in the Florentine church of SS. Annunziata. The exhibition includes high-definition digital displays allowing close inspection of details. Curated by Angelo Tartuferi (director of Museo di San Marco), Nadia Righi (director of Museo Diocesano di Milano), and art historian Gerardo De Simone, the show is accompanied by a catalog published by Dario Cimorelli Editore. The panels present eight episodes from Jesus's life, from the Annunciation to the Dispute with the Doctors, preceded by a cartiglio with a prophecy from Ezekiel. The composition features a double concentric wheel scheme with the four evangelists and four apostles in the inner ring, twelve prophets in the outer, and figures of Ezekiel and Gregory the Great in the lower corners. Particularly striking is the Annunciation panel, where the angel's multicolored wings echo the prophet's wheel, juxtaposing the human drama of the Massacre of the Innocents with the spiritual drama of the Dispute.
