Beaches Musical Closes on Broadway After Tony Snub

other · 2026-05-20

Beaches, The New Musical will close on May 24 after being shut out of Tony nominations. The show began previews at the Majestic Theatre on March 27 and opened April 22, but received mixed to negative reviews and played to only 51 percent capacity last week, earning $550,000 or less weekly. Starring Jessica Vosk and Kelli Barrett, the musical was always set for a limited run through September 6 before a national tour, which producers confirmed is underway. The production had a 10-year development period and premiered internationally in 2024 at Theatre Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart and the 1998 film starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, the story follows the lifelong friendship between Cee Cee and Bertie. Co-directed by Lonny Price and Matt Cowart, with music by Mike Stoller, lyrics by Dart, and book by Dart and Thom Thomas, the musical was developed with David Austin. Producer Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso expressed pride in the production and anticipation for the national tour.
