Beach Cabins Become Art Spaces at Ostia Lido's Historic Sporting Beach

At the Sporting Beach, one of Rome's historic beach establishments dating to the late 1950s and linked to engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, the exhibition 'Cabine d’Artista – Abbi Cura' runs from 20 October to 3 November 2019. Curated by Paola Pallotta, the show transforms classic beach cabins into site-specific installation spaces. Forty Italian and international artists present works addressing themes such as migration, environmental damage, and cultural exchange, with each piece engaging the cabin's intimate scale and seaside context. The venue, which since 2016 has hosted SBA – Sporting Beach Arte, a private gallery open to public and private institutions, also serves as a forum for discussing natural and social issues. The project may become a biennial format. Curator Pallotta describes the cabins as symbolic homes for artists, while RUFA lecturer Fabrizio Pizzuto, who contributed catalogue texts with Stefano Verri, calls the exhibition a discussion on the artistic condition of Rome and Lazio. The show features emerging, semi-emerging, and established artists working across painting, sculpture, video, and other media, each rethinking the cabin as an exhibition space.
