Bayesian Engine Separates Language from Reasoning in Medical AI

A team of researchers has introduced the BMBE (Bayesian Medical Belief Engine), a diagnostic dialogue framework that distinguishes natural-language processing from probabilistic reasoning. In this setup, a large language model (LLM) serves solely as a tool to interpret patient dialogue and formulate inquiries, while a deterministic Bayesian engine manages all diagnostic reasoning. To maintain privacy, patient information is never processed by the LLM. Additionally, the statistical backend can be modified for different target populations without the need for retraining.
