Bauhaus Theater Works by Schlemmer and Kandinsky at Spoleto Festival
The 62nd Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto celebrates the centenary of the Bauhaus by presenting two theatrical works from Oskar Schlemmer and Wassily Kandinsky. These performances, held at Teatro Nuovo Menotti, are adaptations based on reconstructions from 1977 and 2019. In collaboration with the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and the German 100 Jahre Bauhaus initiative, Schlemmer's Triadische Ballett (1922) features twelve dances that delve into themes of technology, humanity, and nature, structured into three parts. The score, composed by Hans-Joachim Espos, foreshadows the works of Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage. Meanwhile, Kandinsky's Quadri di un'esposizione (1928), accompanied by Mussorgsky's music, incorporates sixteen watercolors and abstract forms, reconstructed by Horst Birr and Stefano Laudato using original methods.
