Bauhaus Graphic Novel by Valentina Grande and Sergio Varbella Published by Centauria
A new graphic novel titled "Bauhaus. L'idea che ha cambiato il mondo" (Bauhaus: The Idea That Changed the World), written by Valentina Grande and illustrated by Sergio Varbella, has been published by Centauria in Milan. The book personifies the Bauhaus school as a living narrator, recounting its founding by Walter Gropius in 1919 in Weimar, its moves to Dessau and Berlin, and its revolutionary approach to design that combined technology, mass production, and social purpose. Grande, previously known for a graphic novel on Feminist Art, and Varbella collaborated to capture the school's creative energy and its emphasis on essence over decoration. The narrative covers the Bauhaus's origins after World War I, its key figures such as Klee, Kandinsky, Muche, and Mies van der Rohe, and its legacy of inclusivity, spirituality, women's presence, anti-capitalism, and sharing. The book was released in 2021, following the centenary celebrations of the Bauhaus in 2019. Grande explains in an interview that the idea came from her and Varbella's shared fascination with the Bauhaus, and they chose to let the school itself tell its story to avoid a conventional biographical approach. The graphic novel is designed as a tribute to Bauhaus geometry and colors, aiming to inspire present and future generations. The volume is 128 pages, priced at €19.90, ISBN 9788869214646.
