Bauhaus Dessau Foundation Launches Digital Catalog of All Bauhaus Writings
The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation is undertaking a pioneering digital catalog project titled "Bauhaus im Text" (The Textual Bauhaus), aiming to compile all texts written by members of the historic Bauhaus school between 1919 and 1933. Funded with €620,000 by the Ministry of Economics, Science and Digitalization of Saxony-Anhalt, this will be the first comprehensive catalog of its kind. Previously, only selected writings were anthologized in Hans Maria Wingler's 1962 volume "Das Bauhaus: Weimar, Dessau, Berlin 1919-1933," while later publications focused on individual authors or topics. Project lead Florian Strob notes that while Bauhaus texts have been used to illustrate object heritage, this pilot project foregrounds the school's textual legacy for the first time. The foundation is also developing two sample digital publications based on "bauhaus. sprachrohr der studierenden. organ der kostufra," the newspaper of communist students at the historic Bauhaus. Scholars are reexamining the theoretical work of urbanist and architect Ludwig Hilberseimer, focusing on his revolutionary 1944 book "The New City" published in Chicago, and his preliminary work begun at the Bauhaus Dessau in 1928/29. The digital catalog will be accessible to researchers worldwide.
