Bauhaus Centenary: A Tour of Architectural Landmarks
A new Bauhaus Museum in Weimar, designed by Heike Hanada and Benedict Thonon, opens on April 6, 2019. The five-story concrete cube with satin-finished glass panels won a 2011 competition with over 530 entries. In Dessau, a second Bauhaus Museum by addenda architects opens in September 2019, joining existing landmarks like the Kornhaus Restaurant by Carl Fieger and the Masters' Houses. The Bauhaus-Archiv Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin, designed by Gropius, Cvijanovic, and Bandel (1976-1979), is undergoing renovation with a new structure by Staab architects to house the museum while the archive remains in the historic building. Tel Aviv's White City, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003, contains about 4,000 Bauhaus-style buildings built by Jewish architects fleeing Nazi persecution; the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv offers tours and exhibitions. The School of Design Ulm, designed by Max Bill (1950-1955), was inaugurated by Walter Gropius and now houses the HfG-Archiv since 2011. The Schminke House in Löbau, designed by Hans Scharoun (1930-1933), features white curved facades, porthole windows, and terraces; it is open for guided tours and events.
