Battle of Leipzig: The Defeat That Doomed Napoleon's Empire
The Battle of Leipzig, occurring from October 16 to 19, 1813, is also referred to as the Battle of the Nations. This conflict stands as the most significant and deadly of the Napoleonic Wars, culminating in a catastrophic defeat for France that signaled the decline of Napoleon's empire. Facing a coalition of approximately 350,000 troops from Russia, Prussia, Austria, Sweden, and others, Napoleon commanded only 180,000 soldiers. The French suffered around 47,000 casualties and lost all territories east of the Rhine. This defeat stemmed from Napoleon's unsuccessful invasion of Russia in 1812, which weakened the Grande Armée and strengthened his adversaries. Following the Treaty of Kalish and the Convention of Tauroggen, Prussia changed allegiance, while Austria joined the Sixth Coalition after Napoleon dismissed Metternich's peace proposals. During the battle, Saxon divisions defected to the Allies, and a hasty demolition of a bridge led to severe losses during the French withdrawal. Napoleon abdicated in April 1814 and was sent into exile on Elba, though he made a brief return during the Hundred Days before facing final defeat at Waterloo.
