Battista Dossi: The Forgotten Brother of Dosso Dossi Gets His Due

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Battista Leuteri (circa 1490–1548), the younger sibling of Giovanni (Dosso Dossi), is increasingly recognized for his unique artistic contributions. He began his professional journey in 1517 with the creation of three masks and subsequently joined Raphael's workshop in Rome. Upon his return to Ferrara, he collaborated with Dosso to embellish the apartments of Duke Alfonso I d'Este. Battista's artistic approach combined Raphael's forms with Dosso's creative ideas, emphasizing expansive vistas. In the 1530s, the brothers produced fresco cycles at Villa Imperiale (1530) and Castello del Buonconsiglio (1531) for Prince-Bishop Bernardo Cles. Recent research has linked portions of the Buonconsiglio frescoes to Battista. His works, including 'Democrito' and 'Sacra Famiglia con San Giovanni Battista e angeli,' are featured in the Trento exhibition 'I volti della sapienza.' Following Dosso's passing in 1542, Battista took charge of the Ferrara workshop, integrating influences from Michelangelo and Flemish art.
