BASTA! Exhibition Confronts Violence Through Contemporary Latin American Art at John Jay College
Between May 5 and July 15, 2016, the Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery at John Jay College in New York showcased "BASTA!", an exhibition that explored violence in Latin America through contemporary artistic expressions, curated by Claudia Calirman and Isabella Villanueva. The exhibition featured works from fourteen artists hailing from Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela, categorized into those depicting violence as a method and those representing it in an aesthetic manner. Highlighted artworks included Mondongo's Calavera 5 (2009–13), Giancarlo Scaglia's Stellar (2016), Alice Miceli's In Depth (landmines)/Colombian Series (2015), Teresa Margolles' Irrigación (2010), Regina Galindo's Perra (2005), and Aníbal Lopez's Testimonio (2012). The goal of the exhibition was to address global systemic violence and complicity.
