Bassano del Grappa exhibition reveals secrets hidden on the backs of paintings

exhibition · 2026-05-04

An exhibition in Bassano del Grappa, titled 'Abscondita,' displays paintings from the reverse side, revealing hidden details such as inventory labels, travel stickers, wartime security markings, market valuations, and previous owners' notes. The show aims to democratize access to information typically reserved for scholars. Chiara Casarin, director of the Museo Civico and project creator, conceived the idea after noticing the reverse of Antonio Canova's 'Mercato degli amorini' featured five dancing figures. The museum team examined around 150 works, selecting 77 for display. Notable discoveries include a crucifixion on the back of a portrait by Pietro Roversi, Francesco Hayez's signature on a small painting, and a misattribution label for Giandomenico Tiepolo. The exhibition also features damaged works from storage, such as Canova's plaster busts bombed in 1945. Didactics include miniature images of the front sides for reference. The project was executed by museum staff and civil service volunteers at no extra cost, with communication and printing covered by existing budgets.
