Basim Magdy's 'New Acid' video screened at former Turin zoo during Art Week

exhibition · 2026-04-26

During Turin's Art Week, running until November 2, 2025, a special screening of Egyptian artist Basim Magdy's 2019 video 'New Acid' takes place at the Ex Giardino Zoologico – Parco Michelotti, a former zoo that operated from 1955 to 1987 and is now a symbol of animal protection. The 16mm film, characterized by psychedelic atmospheres, depicts animals in a delirious group chat, with dialogue touching on existential themes—a hippo says, 'I want to exist in someone else's dreams,' a peacock muses, 'No one remembers what it feels like to wake up after a dream,' and a giraffe concludes, 'We're all trapped in a reality show.' The absurd exchanges create a metaphor linking caged animals to humans increasingly enslaved by algorithms and technology. The project is presented by Artissima in collaboration with the City of Turin and Prague's Hunt Kastner gallery. Additionally, C2C Festival curates a musical selection for the second consecutive year to encourage visitors to explore the park.
