cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

After a two-year restoration, the Basilica di Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome reopened in November 2024, just in time for the Jubilee. This structure, constructed in the 15th century during Pope Sixtus IV's reign, showcases a blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles, with notable contributions from artists such as Bramante, Raphael, Caravaggio, and Bernini. The restoration, overseen by the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma and financed by the Fondo Edifici di Culto, Urban Vision S.p.A., and Mecenati Roman Heritage, concentrated on the transept and nave. Significant features restored included the gilded stucco arch of the main altar, Bernini's choir lofts, and the terracotta flooring of the Cappella Cerasi. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli commended the effort to preserve cultural heritage.
