Bashir Makhoul's The Promise Opens at Zawyeh Gallery Dubai
Zawyeh Gallery in Dubai presents The Promise, a solo exhibition by Palestinian artist Bashir Makhoul, running from 13 April to 30 June 2025. The show features new works exploring home, displacement, and memory through motifs like the elemental house—a cube with door and window—arranged in dense formations evoking refugee camps. The Fractured Oblivion series extends his earlier Promise series, with blossom petals encircling dark voids referencing bullet holes Makhoul photographed in 1990s Beirut, alluding to his family's Nakba exile. The Skein series uses tangled threads to symbolize exile and return, with works like Drift and Density (3) addressing Palestinian loss and resilience. Makhoul's electroplated 3D printing experiments introduce crystalline structures, culminating in My Olive Tree, where geometric forms create a spectral olive tree—a personal symbol of land he does not own. The exhibition title reflects the duality of promise as both event and potential betrayal, central to Makhoul's practice of creation and fragmentation. This is Makhoul's first solo exhibition in Dubai.
