Basel Social Club 2024 Moves to a Farm Amidst Strawberry Fields and Cow Pastures
The third edition of Basel Social Club, running June 9–16, 2024, has relocated to the countryside of Basel, Switzerland, just 3 km from the central station and minutes from Art Basel. Organized by a collective of gallerists, artists, and curators founded in 2022, the non-profit initiative offers an alternative to the formal atmosphere of the main fair. This year, artworks and events are scattered across farms, fields, and agricultural businesses in the Bruderholz district, accessible via a digital map as part of a "Nature Trail" created with the city and University of Basel. Key sites include the restaurant Predigerhof (main stage for performances and food vendors) and Mathis-hof (artisan market and farm shop). Visitors can explore open-air tea rooms, unattended vegetable stands (honor system), and a strawberry field where picking costs 7 CHF. The project emphasizes peri-urban agriculture and aims to provide a completely different experience for fair-goers, highlighting how such agricultural spaces can be activated around cities like Milan, Bologna, Turin, Florence, and Rome.
