Basel Foundation Shows Only Gallery-Free Artists

institutional · 2026-04-27

The Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger | KBH.G has launched in Basel, the city known for Art Basel and the Beyeler Foundation, with a unique approach: showcasing artists who lack gallery representation. Established in 2019 by Sibylle Geiger, who passed away in 2020, and named after her grandfather, Hermann Geiger, a Swiss pharmacist and entrepreneur, the foundation officially opened on September 9, 2021, after delays due to Covid. It features three complimentary exhibitions annually, providing free catalogs to attendees. The inaugural exhibition, "Music – A Conversation Through Song Titles," by the Basel duo Jahic/Roethlisberger, is on display until November 14, 2021, featuring neon signs of 80 song titles from artists like Albert Oehlen and Judith Bernstein. Director Raphael Suter emphasized that the duo's non-commercial approach aligns with the foundation's mission for accessible art.
