Basel Abbas & Ruanne Abou-Rahme premiere new video work at Nottingham Contemporary
Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme have premiered their latest video work, Prisoners of Love (2025), at Nottingham Contemporary in the UK. This piece documents confinement narratives of Palestinian prisoners. The artist duo, based in Ramallah and New York, creates politically charged installations that blend original footage, field recordings, oral histories, archival material, and news imagery into frenetic video works. Their practice focuses on documenting Palestinian life and amplifying regional artists. In 2025, they will present Enemy of the Sun, a performance and installation commissioned for the Aichi Triennale, which incorporates imagery of Israeli soldiers harassing Palestinian residents alongside scenes of dancing groups. Abbas emphasized their commitment to being with the land, specifically Palestine. Last year, their exhibition May amnesia never kiss us on the mouth (2020–) filled both Copenhagen Contemporary and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, addressing forced Palestinian displacement through performance. The pair originally met within the UK electronic music scene, an influence that persists in their work's rhythmic intensity.
