Bartolomeo Gatto Foundation Launches in Former Studio, Milan Exhibition Follows

institutional · 2026-04-27

A foundation dedicated to Salerno-born artist Bartolomeo Gatto (1938–2021) was established in September 2022 in his former studio at Giovi Altimari. The Bartolomeo Gatto Foundation ETS aims to catalog his 60-year career, promote his connection to nature and the Cilento region, and support young artists through study days, interviews, exhibitions, and publications. Gatto studied at Brera Academy in Milan and won the European prize Les Artes en Europe. He met Salvador Dalí and Giorgio de Chirico, who praised his coloristic charge. In 1970 he founded the monthly magazine Il Cigno and the eponymous contemporary art gallery in Milan with his wife Adele De Santis. After a 1971 traveling exhibition organized by Luis Pollhammer in Germany and Switzerland, he discovered Sardinia in 1978, which became a recurring motif. He created over 200 solo shows, including at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum, Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, Villa Litta in Lainate, Italian Cultural Institutes in New York, San Francisco, and Stuttgart, and Palazzo Barberini in Rome. In November 2022, the exhibition "Bartolomeo Gatto. INVISIBILI PERCEZIONI. Dialogo tra Poeti" opened at Marco Nereo Rotelli's Studio Art Project in Milan, curated by Luca Cantore D'Amore. It featured 20 works from 2000–2010, centered on Sardinian stones from the "Pietre Amanti" series. Gatto described himself as a solitary figure using pure colors with a special bond to rocks.
