Barragán Rugs Collection Blends Pre-Hispanic Memory with Contemporary Design
Barragán Rugs is a collection of three handcrafted rugs that explores cultural memory through artisanal techniques, color, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The collection results from a partnership between txt.ure and Azotea, based in Mexico City. Each rug requires up to two months of work by the Millán Pérez family, involving over 25,000 hand-tied knots and the labor of more than twelve people. The visual research, developed with designer Helena Ichbiah, focuses on sophisticated color palettes that reference pre-Hispanic motifs. The rugs are designed as contemporary compositions where color becomes structure, inviting tactile experience. Beyond the initial pieces, the collection offers custom rugs for interior design projects, allowing the Barragán Rugs language to adapt to different spatial contexts. The project emphasizes collective creation, manual knowledge, and material experimentation as integral to contemporary design practice.
