Barozzi Veiga completes Tanzhaus Zürich along the Limmat river

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

The Tanzhaus Zürich, designed by Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga of Barozzi Veiga, opened to the public in September 2019 after an international competition and three years of construction. Commissioned by Bauherrschaft Immobilien Stadt Zürich, represented by Stadt Zürich, Amt für Hochbauten, the building is located on a sloping bank of the Limmat river. The architects, who founded their studio in 2004, have previously created notable works including the Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin, Poland (which won the Mies van der Rohe Award 2015), the auditorium in Águilas, Spain (2011), and the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, Switzerland (2019). The Tanzhaus continues their exploration of "sentimental monumentality," balancing site specificity with architectural autonomy. The building's design integrates with the riverbank, using the change in elevation to separate public and private flows: upper level houses private school offices, while the lower level features a large public foyer extending the full length of the building alongside a riverside promenade. The architecture is described as anisotropic, functioning as a modular system rather than a self-contained object. Barozzi Veiga are now preparing for a larger project: the comprehensive redesign of the Chicago Art Institute's macro-block.
