Baroque Masterpieces Return to Naples After Four Centuries

A detailed philological analysis has led to the return of forty artworks to Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano in Naples, recreating the collection once owned by Flemish merchants Gaspar de Roomer and Ferdinand Vandeneynden. Curated by Antonio Ernesto Denunzio, the exhibition titled 'Rubens, Van Dyck, Ribera. La collezione di un principe' reestablishes a private collection that epitomized social elevation in 17th-century Naples. In 1688, an inventory compiled by Luca Giordano allowed an international group of scholars to reconstruct the gallery's interiors as they were experienced by visitors. The museum, part of Intesa Sanpaolo, features Baroque masterpieces from both Neapolitan and Flemish traditions, including works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and others, displayed in frescoed salons and a grand staircase overlooking Via Toledo.
