Bari International Gender Festival turns 10 with techno, performance, and queer art
The Bari International Gender Festival (BIG) celebrates its tenth edition from October 31 to November 30, 2024, in Bari, Italy. The festival, organized by the social cooperative AL.I.C.E., blends performance, visual arts, cinema, dance, and theater with a queer focus. The opening night on October 31 at Teatro Kismet features experimental techno DJ and producer Dasha Rush, known for performances at Mutek Montreal, Ars Electronica, L.E.V. Festival, MIRA Barcelona, and ADE Amsterdam Dance Event. Over twenty events follow from November 3 across Bari's cultural venues, including performances by Lebanese choreographer Omar Rajeh, Jamaican-Norwegian performer Harald Behare, the Dewey Dell company, rapper Catherine Atim (Catu Diosis) of the Nyege Nyege network, choreographer Nadia Beugré, theater company Fanny & Alexander, and the artistic collective Democracia. The Contemporary Art Focus, curated by artist Pamela Diamante for the third year, highlights Democracia, founded in Madrid in 1970 by Iván López and Pablo España. The collective presents a talk at Biblioteca Metropolitana De Gemmis and the exhibition "Enjoy the Collapse" at Spazio Murat, co-produced with the festival. Spanish artist Nuria Güell (born 1981 in Vidreras, Gerona) contributes to the exhibition with critical reflections on gender and social resistance. On November 14, Fondazione Pino Pascali in Polignano a Mare hosts Nunzia Picciallo's performance "Lemmy B," exploring non-normative subjectivity through the body.
