Barefooting: Walking Barefoot to Listen to the Landscape

Barefooting, the practice of walking barefoot in nature, is gaining traction as a form of slow tourism and sensory connection. The human foot, with 7,200 nerve endings, 26 bones, and 33 joints, becomes a listening tool. The Society for Barefoot Living, with over 1,100 members, is the leading international organization. In Italy, Andrea Bianchi founded Il Silenzio dei Passi, the first barefoot hiking school, and holds the record for the longest barefoot Indian file in the mountains at the foot of the Dolomites. He authored Cold Therapy and developed the HOT mind method (Higher Order Thinking), integrating barefooting with conscious breathing and controlled exposure to natural elements. The Trentino region offers extensive barefoot trails, including the Barefoot Park in Val Concei (Garda Trentino), Vallarsa Kneipp Valley near Rovereto, Dolomiti Natural Wellness in Adamello Brenta Nature Park, Barefoot del Primiero facing the Pale di San Martino, and three sensory paths in Val di Fassa between Moena and Soraga. Other Italian regions feature similar experiences: Morgex in Aosta Valley, Parco dei Cinque Sensi in Viterbo province, and Forni di Sopra in Friuli developing integrated barefoot, Kneipp, and breathing trails. The practice extends globally to Morocco, Nepal, and the Amazon forest.
