Barcelona's Hospital Sant Pau: Art Nouveau Masterpiece Designed for Healing
Designed by Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the Hospital Sant Pau in Barcelona is the world's largest Art Nouveau complex, created with the belief that beautiful surroundings could aid healing. Construction began in 1902, and the hospital replaced the overcrowded medieval Hospital de la Santa Creu. Domènech i Montaner, who was Antoni Gaudí's teacher, envisioned a 'city within a city' with nearly 30 colorful pavilions surrounded by gardens, sunshine, and fresh air. Each pavilion was oriented for natural sunlight, with ceramic-clad surfaces for hygiene, floral mosaics, vaulted ceilings, and stone carvings of saints and angels. Patients could relax in sunrooms and gardens with lavender, rosemary, and orange trees, and underground passageways allowed discreet transport. The monastery pavilion, designed by his son Pere Domènech, housed essential services like the kitchen, pharmacy, and nuns' quarters. Domènech i Montaner died in 1923 before completion. The hospital served patients for nearly 80 years until 2009, when medical care moved to a modern facility nearby. In 1997, UNESCO declared the complex a World Heritage Site for its 'architectural uniqueness and artistic beauty.' The restored pavilions are now open to visitors, offering a glimpse into Catalan Modernisme.
