Barcelona Reclaims Antoni Clavé with Major Multi-Venue Retrospective

exhibition · 2026-04-26

A retrospective in Barcelona celebrates the contributions of Antoni Clavé (1913–2005), a Catalan artist who primarily worked in France. Curated by Aude Hendgen and José Félix Bentz, the exhibition is hosted across Palau Martorell, Reial Cercle Artístic, and the Clavé rooms at Palau de la Generalitat, featuring five donated paintings and four sculptures from the 1990s. It includes pieces from private collections, such as FC Barcelona. The display emphasizes Clavé's transition from Republican Barcelona to Paris after exile, along with 27 smaller works from the 1940s and 50s at Galleria Gaspar. Clavé, who began as a house painter, exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in 1978 and represented Spain at the Venice Biennale in 1984. The exhibition is open until November 16.
