Barcelona Pavilion Gets Temporary White Vinyl Makeover by Anna & Eugeni Bach
The Fundació Mies van der Rohe has invited architects Anna and Eugeni Bach to temporarily transform Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's iconic Barcelona Pavilion. Their project, Mies Missing Materiality, covers all surfaces—including marble, travertine, and golden onyx—with a white vinyl film, creating a homogeneous monochrome appearance. The intervention is part of a series encouraging international artists and architects to reinterpret the 20th-century architectural icon; previous participants include SANAA, Jeff Wall, Ai Weiwei, and Enric Miralles. The Bachs aim to shift focus to themes of originality, the white surface as a symbol of modernity, and materiality's role in spatial perception. The installation is documented by photographer Adrià Goula, who captured both the finished result and the installation process. The pavilion is located at Av. Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia 7, Barcelona, and the intervention runs until November 27, 2017.
