Barcelona Gallery Weekend Returns for Third Edition After Terror Attack

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

The third edition of Barcelona Gallery Weekend (BGW) takes place from September 28 to October 1, 2017, featuring exhibitions in 24 galleries selected by an expert committee. Organized by Art Barcelona, the event aims to position the city as a European art capital beyond its Gaudí heritage. This year's edition includes a Contemporary Art Tour for international professionals, guided visits to museums and private collections, the Compositions program curated by Glòria Picazo and Alexandra Laudo showcasing artists in little-known spaces, and the itinerant exhibition D'esquenes a la galeria curated by Joana Hurtado offering free guided tours of gallerists' private collections. The Acquisitions program encourages foundations and private companies to purchase at least one exhibited work. The event occurs in the wake of the August 17 terrorist attack that struck Barcelona, with cultural tourism seen as part of the city's return to normalcy.
