Barbizon and the Forest of Fontainebleau: A Legacy of the École de Barbizon
The Forest of Fontainebleau, an hour south of Paris, inspired a community of artists from the early 19th century, leading to the École de Barbizon, a precursor to Impressionism. The term was coined by Scottish critic David Croal Thomson in 1890. Artists like Camille Corot (first visit in 1822), Théodore Rousseau, and Jean-François Millet sought to escape urban Paris to paint rural scenes. Today, Barbizon retains its artistic heritage with the Musée des peintres de Barbizon, housed in the Auberge Ganne and Rousseau's home-studio, and a private museum dedicated to Millet. The forest, visited by 15 million annually (70% French), spans 22,000 hectares and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A bronze plaque by Henri Chapu (1884) commemorates Rousseau and Millet. The Reserve artistique de la Forêt de Fontainebleau, established in 1853 on Rousseau's initiative, was an early environmental protection effort. Nearby, the Château de Fontainebleau, linked to the forest, saw the birth of Philip the Fair and Louis XIII, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), and Napoleon's farewell address. Its horseshoe staircase, commissioned by Louis XIII in 1632 from architect Jean Androuet du Cerceau, has been recently restored.
